I have practiced journaling for decades on and off. I am currently on day 480 of writing Morning Pages as directed by Julia Cameron; my desire to do so ignited by
of .In the 90’s when I bought my first computer, I thought it would be fantastic and highly progressive of me to write there. Pffffft, it absolutely was not! I could not drain emotion out through the keyboard the same way as the pen; even banging away at 74 wpm. Ha!
In my practice, I often suggest that clients pick up a pretty journal and a great pen to help work through their experiences.
Why is writing so immensely therapeutic?
I received clarity while reading
’s book The Poet Prince, where she explains the magic of infusion. Renaissance artists learned this sacred art of placing the essence of their subject in their creations; “For those with eyes to see and ears to hear.” This is why some art is lovely and technically correct, whereas other art can drop a person to their knees with an emotional, visceral experience which seems to draw them into the scene. In my twenties, I was drawn to the writing of Samaya Roman and Shakti Gawain. As I immersed myself in their works, a sensation came over me as if the top of my head had opened to allow the work to flow in from above into my being, as well as absorbed into my mind through vision. It did very much feel as though knowledge was being infused with me.
What does this have to do with writing?
It stands to reason that we could also drain away the essence of our disharmony onto the page. When I write of my struggles, I am clearing space for solutions to flow into my soul, and out through my hand. The problems become lighter as they are released through the ink.
The energy we put into the work we release to the world matters.
Energy matters. Emotions matter.
I hope you write. I hope you connect to that greater part of you who has the answers you seek.
Thank you for reading.

Well, you know how I feel about journaling. But you've reframed it in a way that is warming me up to it. 🙂
I love the romance of pen to paper and a beautiful book to write in. I wish I could settle into that; In the meantime, I'll run my fingers like a sprint on the keyboard.
