My first encounter with The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron was in my twenties approximately half my life ago. I wanted to be an artist, I wrote a lot of angst filled poems and collaborated on a song however I thought being a true artist was out of my reach.
One of the exercises in the book encouraged writing out a desire with pen and paper. Describe the possession, experience, or person in the present tense as if you were already in the experience. Describe how you would feel, what you would do with that dream in place, what would it give to you, what you would be wearing; really fill in the details, immerse yourself in the dream as if it were real and already manifest.
Take the letter, fold it, put it in an envelope, and tuck it away for the universe to bring it to you.
I started with small desires, things that were easy to get… the universe provided. I was pleased, and still not convinced so I decided to really test this etheric team of mine out.
I had the unfortunate luck of losing the diamond out of my engagement ring months before. I believed some foolish old wives’ tale that this foretold the demise of my marriage. (We did get divorced after 27 years of marriage which is another story and not likely related to the diamond! ha!) I decided to put fate and faith to the test and request my diamond back.
On my little piece of paper, I wrote that I wanted my diamond back. The same cut, colour, clarity… returned to me free of charge. I sealed the envelope, tucked it away, and waited, truly not sure how this was going to transpire but what the heck, the little things had happened; parking spaces galore, things on sale when I needed them, so why not this.
Weeks later found me on a typical grocery run with kids and prescription refills on my mind, no room for diamonds. I bent down to pick up a jug of milk and spied a tiny golden band on the floor. It looked like a child’s toy ring, I popped it in my pocket and continued loading the cart.
I arrived at the pharmacy to find the order was not yet processed and took a seat to wait, pulling the ring out of my pocket to examine it further. There appeared to be a flush mounted diamond in the band which prompted examination of the inside of the band.

Say what? Bring on the moral dilemma. You know that scene in the cartoons where the character is flanked by the little angel on one shoulder and the little devil on the other? Well, that was what I experienced at that moment.
Devil me “Look! It’s a replacement for your diamond, just like you wished for. You should keep it!”
Angel me “Oh No! You cannot keep that! Someone else lost it and they are going to be sad just like you were. You have to turn it in…”
There was a third me who walked the middle line and she took the ring home. I called the store and reported the find, leaving my name and number in case someone came looking. This was back in the day when people read newspapers and you could post Found Items for free, so I did that too.
After six months, with no claimant coming forward, I took both my barren ring and this new found ring to the jewelers. I asked them to mount the diamond from one to the other, I would have to pay for a new claw set if there was a difference, but there was not. This new to me diamond was the very same cut, colour, and clarity as the lost one.
Yay Universe, thank you!
After that, I manifested a new job, a car, and the house of my dreams.
What have you created out of thin air, dear reader? Please tell me in the comments.
Magically yours,
Patricia
When I was a kid, I had a Sunday school teacher (in hindsight, a somewhat bizarre Sunday school teacher) who had us write down what kind of spouse we wanted in the future - in detail, down to hair color, etc. Mine came true!
